GUSTAVE DORÉ ORIGINAL WOOD ENGRAVING FROM "FAIRY TALES RETOLD BY PERRAULT" [1862]
Book Details + Condition: Librarie Firmin Didot Frères et Fils (Paris), 1862. The individual wood engraving for sale is PUSS IN BOOTS (or "Le Maitre Chat, ou Le Chat Botté"), from "Les Contes de Perrault" — or, "Fairy Tales Retold by Perrault", illustrated by Gustave Doré. Doré's 40+ full-page wood engraved plates fill the book. The book itself had blue cloth binding, with embossed gilt decorations; unfortunately, the boards were completely destroyed. The famous fairytales of Charles Perrault (1628-1703) include Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and many more. Doré's (1832-1883) full-page illustrations are remarkable and perfect for framing. Each page is on the book's original heavy stock paper, and measures approximately 17" x 12", with the actual engraving measuring 11" x 9". Each is signed in-plate by Gustave Doré, and is blank on the reverse.
Foxing present to plain cream edging; small tears and chipping to edges; engraving itself is clean. Please see Doré's other fairytale engravings for sale at Black Cat Caboodle.
